February 2012 Book of the Month
To Celebrate Black History Month, the February book of the month will be
Double V: The Civil Rights Struggle of the Tuskegee Airmen.
The central theme of Double V is the promise held out to African American military personnel that service in World War II would deliver to them a double victory—a "double V"—over tyranny abroad and racial prejudice at home.

Double V: The Civil Rights Struggle of the Tuskegee Airmen
Lawrence P. Scott and William M. Womack

January 2012 Book of the Month
This book explores the role of Michigan State University in America's early efforts at nation-building in South Vietnam and fills an important void in Vietnam scholarship. Relying on the Michigan State University Vietnam Project Papers, the John A. Hannah Papers, and the recently cataloged Wesley Fishel Papers, Ernst persuasively interprets MSU's part in committing the Eisenhower administration to Ngo Dinh Diem and South Vietnam. This book is a must read for anyone interested in the early period of the US involvement in South Vietnam.

"Forging a Fateful Alliance" by John Ernst.

December 2011 Book of the month
This month marks the 70th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, in honor of this; our book of the month selection will be on this subject.

We have selected a book that is often overlooked and tells the tale of the Navy Divers who came in after the attack for rescue and recovery efforts. This book is out of print, but copies are available on Amazon

Descent into Darkness Pearl Harbor, 1941 (The True Story of a Navy Diver) by Edward C. Raymer

November 2011 Book of the Month
This month’s book of the month is George Koskimaki’s “Hell’s Highway”
George is a Michigan native who served in WWII with the 101st Airborne. He has written several books on the 101st, he is also one heck of a nice guy!

HELL'S HIGHWAY: Chronicle of the 101st Airborne Division in the Holland Campaign, September - November 1944

October 2011 Book of the Month
A first person memoir by local veteran author John M. “Jack” Roberts.

Escape: The True Story Of A World War II P.O.W. The Germans Couldn't Hold

September 2011 Book of the Month
Something a little different for this month’s book of the month, this book is by a local author and discusses the role of the Polish military in WWII.

No Greater Ally: The Untold Story of Poland's Forces in World War II

August 2011 Book of the Month
This is another first person memoir written by a local veteran.
Drafted out of college at age 18 in 1944, he was trained as a rifleman and then sent to the Philippines as an infantry replacement. There he joined the battle hardened 6th Infantry Division on the Shimbu Line near Manila.

Boy Soldier: Coming of Age During World War II

July 2011 Book of the Month
Since it is air show time, our July book of the month will be aviation themed, written by Detroit native and Tuskegee Airman Alexander Jefferson.
We had the honor of meeting Col. Jefferson several times and he is a truly inspirational individual. This book is a great read.

Red Tail Captured, Red Tail Free

June 2011 Book of the month!
This month we have two recommendations from local author Tom Oblinger!
Both books are great reads!
